Thanks to Mick B for todays report
Distance: 60+ miles Average speed: 17.6mph
The Wheelers group left the Withy Trees at 9 am sharp in order to catch
the 10am start of the Hill Climb at Quernmore Crossroads. The group
comprised Ric, Dodgy, GeeDee and Joe D from the Wheelers, with Andy
Tabernacle from SiS and an unidentified rider tagging on at the back! They
picked up me (MickB) at Kirkland Bridge who left too late to make it to
Withy's!!! Judging by how long it took me chasing at 25mph to get onto the
back the pace was quite 'brisk'. The mystery rider turned off at Garstang
leaving six of us to continue up the A6 to Forton where we headed towards
Quernmore. We arrived at the crossroads to see several competitors getting
ready for ten minutes or so of pain, including our very own JPS. (Now that
fellow is keen- he'd ridden a '25' in Cheshire just 17 hours before!!)This
just left time to struggle (well I did) up the first very steep section of
the climb to a suitable viewing/heckling point. One by one the riders came
into view, some clearly not being natural climbers!! A Wheelers jersey
came slowly into view, after some initial problems working out who it was
(thanks to a woolly hat) we decided it was Jose, so we started shouting
our support as he came closer and sprinted past. He almost disappeared
from view over the next crest and our eyes started to drift back down the
hill to see who was next. But something was not quite right about Jose's
pedalling. Had last night's event taken too much out of him? He was
clearly in pain and pulled over, appearing to be sick at the side of the
road. Worried that he might be in the process of dying or something worse
we despatched newly unseated BAR Champ Dodgy Dave up to Jose to check all
was well. After some delay our trusty One Peak bravely remounted his bike
and finished the climb, having suffered an attack of cramp. Well after all
that we waited for the last riders then made our way to the top to check
the results: Needless to say Jose Half Peak was some way down the
finishing order today!!
We hit the road again now with JPS in tow but having lost Tabs who had
jobs waiting at home. After some twisty downhills and short sharp uphills
we finished up near Scorton, our lunch stop for the day. A sprint for the
sign ensued and Dodgy claimed victory with arms aloft, a resurgent JPS
picking up 2nd and Mick B just taking 3rd by a few centimetres from Ric,
thanks to a monster 52x11 gear- soon to be replaced with something more
sedate! After too many chips and coffee the group started the homeward run
through Barnacre, meeting the A6 again at Bilsborrow. JPS, Ric and I left
the boys at Barton to continue our route home through Woodplumpton and
Bartle where JPS (now having the new moniker of Half-Peak) left us. Half
an hour or so later I made it home, pretty battered after 2 hard days on
the bike but that's cycling! We were very lucky with the weather- the
heavens opened within an hour of me getting home!! Roll on next Sunday
lads, it should be a hoot!!
