In 1927, three local clubs met the
Preston Section of the CTC to decide which of them should be the racing
off-shoot of that section. The two unsuccessful clubs in the ballot agreed
to sink their identities, and so was formed this happy association which has
served the cycling community of the town very well over the last seven
decades. The newly formed club gained the right to use the town crest as
part of its badge. This was then the position of the newly formed Preston
Wheelers. They had little to offer prospective members, yet the pre-war
period proved to be one of continuous success, with the Club holding the
national record for 25 miles team time trial, winning awards on courses all
over the country. When racing resumed after the end of World War II, the
Wheelers again began to take a leading part in the administration of cycling
in North Lancashire, in addition to discovering more individual riders and
forming them into successful teams. As a result of this wealth of
experience, the Club promotes many top class events, the trophies offered
every year for open and Club competition are second to none and its
officials are among the most competent in the sport.
